Frequently Asked Questions

The following questions are ones that are frequently asked about the OpenTM2 software and the OpenTM2 project:

How much does OpenTM2 cost?
Answer: OpenTM2 is free and open source software (FOSS). Thus it is free of charge to download and use from a monetary perspective.

What platforms support OpenTM2?
Answer: As of August 2010, OpenTM2 runs only on the Windows platform. Officially it supports versions of Windows up to Windows XP, but has been successfully used on Windows Vista and Windows 7. (Running the help system under Windows Vista and Windows 7 requires a separate download from the Microsoft support website.) In addition, the program can be run under “Windows XP mode” for users of Windows 7 Business or Ultimate or by using virtualization solutions such as OpenBox running Windows XP as a guest operating system on compatible hardware.

How do I get/install OpenTM2?
Answer: The easiest way to obtain OpenTM2 is to visit the Download page and download the precompiled binary of the latest stable version or release candidate as a zip file. After downloading it, unzip the contents and place the otm directory in the root of your C drive. Then launch C:\otm\win\OpenTM2 to run OpenTM2.

Where do I get help or support for OpenTM2?
Answer: The best place at present is get help is the opentm2-support group: http://groups.google.com/group/opentm2-support . This list features OpenTM2 general discussions, support and specific issues (e.g. downloading, compiling, linking, packaging, debugging, etc.) For enterprise-level professional services based on OpenTM2, consult with one of the sponsoring organizations by sending an email to contactopentm2@gmail.com. A list of these organizations can be found on the Project Information Page.

Question: Why doesn’t OpenTM2 have an import/export filter for translation memories in Product X’s format?
Answer: One of the primary goals of OpenTM2 is improved support for open standards in the translation and localization industry. Translation Memory eXchange (TMX) provides a mechanism for the import and export of translation memory databases. The development of direct filters for various proprietary products undermines this goal and the official route for importing and exporting translation memory databases is via TMX.

Question: Why doesn’t OpenTM2 contain a terminology management component?
Answer: OpenTM2 is a translation memory workbench tool, not a terminology management tool. While it does provide basic access to existing terminological data and the capability to add some simple terminology data, the management of terminological resources is a complex task. We anticipate that OpenTM2 will interface with dedicated open-source (or commercial) terminology management tools. Similarly, OpenTM2 does not provide translation memory management tools but will integrate with other tools to provide these functions.

Question: What file formats does OpenTM2 support?
Answer: As of July 2010, OpenTM2 supports project files in the following formats: HTML (UTF-8 and ASCII), JAVA properties file (ASCII, ANSI, UTF-8 and escaped Unicode), OpenOffice files, XHTML, XLIFF, and generic XML. It also supports the import and export of TMX-format translation memory databases.

Question: Why doesn’t OpenTM2 support Format X?
Answer: Probably because nobody has created a filter for that format yet. For text-based formats, development of filters can be relatively straight-forward. For binary formats it can be considerably more complex. If you would like to request development of support for a particular file format, please submit a request via the OpenTM2 Trac system.

Question: When will you add Feature X?
To see what features and ideas we are working on, visit the OpenTM2 Trac system. If you would like to see a feature that is not listed there, consider joining the OpenTM2 Design Group to discuss the idea there before posting it to the Trac system. All feature requests must be posted in the Trac system.

Question: How can I contribute to OpenTM2?
Answer: Our biggest need is for developers and testers. We can use help with many of the tasks associated with releasing new builds/versions of OpenTMS.

Question: I want to join the steering committee. How do I join it?
Participation in the OpenTM2 steering committee is by invitation only. Members are invited to join based on their level of contribution to the project. If you would like to be invited to join the steering committee, the best way is to be involved as an active contributor to the project.
